From The Wanderers to Porky’s

Tony Ganios made his film debut on October 21, 1959 (age: 64 years, as of 2023), in Philip Kaufman’s The Wanderers, a coming-of-age drama set in the Bronx in the 1960s. He had a half-brother named Louis, who passed away in November of 2014. He played Perry LaGuardia, a leader of a gang of Italian-American street toughs, who befriends a group of greasers called the Wanderers.

The film, based on a novel by Richard Price, also starred Ken Wahl, who would become a close friend and collaborator of Tony. The two would work together again in the 1991 film The Taking of Beverly Hills, and the 1987-1990 TV series Wiseguy, where Ganios had a recurring role as a mob lawyer.

But Ganios’ breakthrough role came in 1981, when he was cast as Meat in Bob Clark’s Porky’s, a raunchy comedy about a group of high school friends who seek revenge on a sleazy nightclub owner named Porky, who humiliates them at his establishment. Ganios’ character was nicknamed Meat because of his impressive endowment, which became a source of many jokes and gags in the film. Porky’s was a huge hit, becoming the sixth highest-grossing film of 1982, and spawning two sequels, Porky’s II: The Next Day (1983) and Porky’s Revenge (1985), both of which featured Ganios reprising his role.

Tony Ganios career

The Porky’s series was notorious for its crude humor, nudity, and sexual innuendo, but it also had a heart and a message of friendship, loyalty, and tolerance. He and his co-stars formed a strong bond, and remained close friends for over three decades. In a 2015 interview with Cult Faction, Ganios described the Porky’s cast as a “big, dysfunctional family” that supported each other through the ups and downs of life.

Other Roles and Semi-Retirement

Tony Ganios also appeared in other films in the 1980s and early 1990s, often playing characters that required physical presence and toughness. He starred alongside John Belushi in the 1981 comedy Continental Divide, where he played a mountain man who helps a journalist (Belushi) find a rare eagle. He had a cameo in Die Hard 2 (1990), where he played a killer who is stabbed in the eye with an icicle by Bruce Willis’ John McClane.

His last Hollywood film was Rising Sun (1993), directed by Kaufman, where he played a security guard who is killed by a samurai sword. He also had guest roles in TV shows such as Scarecrow and Mrs. King (1987) and The Equalizer (1988).

Ganios decided to semi-retire from acting after Rising Sun, and pursued other interests, such as writing, producing, and teaching. He made occasional appearances in independent films, such as The Kings of Brooklyn (2004), The Latin & The Gringo (2010), and The Wanderers: The Quest of The Demon Hunter (2017). He also attended fan conventions and reunions, where he met and interacted with his loyal followers.

He explained his reasons for leaving the entertainment industry in the 2015 interview, saying, “While I did miss acting, I didn’t miss the entertainment industry or most of the people in it. But as time went by, I would constantly run into fans who were genuinely disappointed to know that I had quit the business.”

Wife, Kids, Fiancee, Marriage

Tony Ganios was engaged to Amanda Serrano-Ganios, whom he met in 2018. The couple shared a love for animals and had several pets, including dogs, cats, and birds. He was also an avid reader, a history buff, and a fan of sports, especially baseball and football.

Death

Tony Ganios died on February 18, 2024, at a hospital in New York, after a long surgery for a spinal infection. His fiancée announced his death on X, with a photo of the two holding hands, and a caption that read, “I love you so much, my love. I’m broken.” She later followed up with another tweet, saying, “The last words we said to each other were, ‘I love you.’ Love is an understatement. You are everything to me. My heart, my soul and my best friend.” She also thanked the fans for their condolences and support, and asked for privacy during this difficult time.

Ganios’ death was mourned by his friends, colleagues, and fans, who paid tribute to him on social media and other platforms. Ken Wahl, his longtime friend and co-star, wrote on X, “Rest In Peace, Buddy … I love you.” Bob Clark, the director of Porky’s, said in a statement, “Tony was a wonderful actor and a great person. He brought so much joy and laughter to the Porky’s movies, and to millions of people around the world.

He will be dearly missed, but never forgotten.” Dan Monahan, who played Pee Wee in Porky’s, said in an interview, “Tony was like a brother to me. He was always there for me, and for all of us. He was the heart and soul of Porky’s, and of our gang. He was a gentle giant, with a big heart and a big smile. He was a legend, and I’m honored to have known him and worked with him.”
