Sofia Sapega (born February 10, 1998) is a Russian Student and Controversial Personality based in Vilnius, Lithuania. A recent incident in Belarus, a country in Europe grabbed attention from all over the globe. On 23rd May 2021, a Ryanair civilian flight was flying as scheduled.
The flight departed from Athens at 7:29 and had to land in Vilnius but deliberately, the flight was rerouted and diverted over Belarus to land in Minsk, forcefully.
Alexander Lukashenko, the President of Belarus is the mastermind behind this international scandal. He remained the first as well as the current president of Belarus. He is serving in this post since the establishment of the office which took place on 20 July 1994. There were more than 100 passengers on the flight but more critically for Lukashenko, Russian opposition Roman Protasevich was one of the passengers.
Roman along with his girlfriend Sofia Sapega was arrested by the Belarusian officials. Soon after their detention they both appeared in a video on Monday, 24 May 2021, recorded at the Belarusian detention center and soon it got viral. Alexander was accused of ‘state terrorism’ and ‘hijacking’.

On 23 May 2021, Sofia Sapega and Roman were returning from their holiday in Greece. They were on a civilian plane FR4978 with other passengers. The scheduled destination of this plane was will Vilnius. As per the source, the flight was diverted midway. It later forced to land in Minsk.
Many news channel then confirmed that Belarus took a decision of sending a fighter jet in order to done the forced landing. The reason given to the officials for the emergency landing was the possibility of a bomb in the plane. But when the plane was scanned, no bomb was found. Police then took Mr. Protasevich away while the other passengers were departed untouched.
Later, the news popped out claiming that Roman was not the only person who got arrested rather was arrested along with his girlfriend Sofia. Alexander used his military aviation against peaceful Belarusian and European civilians to punch a single individual. He gave the order to divert the flight and arrest Roman. Roman Protasevich may face the death penalty.
The EHU has stood in support of their student Sofia and they said that she was returning to the Lithuanian capital to defend her Master’s thesis ahead of graduation. The university is in constant touch with her family and friends. Video recorded at the Belarusian detention center of Roman and Sofia got viral.
Sofia Sapega gave her details in the video Andrew man claimed that he has been treated with dignity and is not facing any problem. He will cooperate with the police here. On watching the video, Protasevich’s father came up and told the BBC that he is fearful his son may be tortured and uncertain whether it’s his son’s own words or he is reading a script.
Soon after this Sofia’s parents also came up sharing the videos to seek help from the public and European officials. This has been an outrage topic across the globe and the people are demanding to release the couple and drag a full investigation.
Alexander was unknown to the repercussions he might face after this act. Dozens of Belarusian officials, including the President, are already under EU sanctions including travel bans and asset freezes.

Sofia Sapega is in a romantic relationship with Roman Protasevich. Roman was born on 5 May 1995 in Minsk, Belarus. Roman is 26 years old Belarusian and journalist and activist. Protasevich had served as editor-in-chief of the Telegram channel ‘Nexta’, in addition to this he is the chief editor of another Telegram channel labeled ‘Belarus of the Brain’.
In a video released by the Belarusian officials, Roman confessed to organizing a mass protest in Minsk. A woman has been an opposition activist for a long. He was a part of the opposition organization ‘Young Front’.
