Samrat Choudhary career

Samrat Choudhary was born on 16 November 1968 (Age: 55 years, as of 2023) in Lakhanpur village of Munger district in Bihar. His father, Shakuni Choudhary, and his mother, Parvati Devi, were both prominent politicians who had served as MLAs from Tarapur constituency seven times each. His father was also a former MP and a close associate of Lalu Prasad Yadav, the founder of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD). He belongs to the Koeri caste, which is a sub-group of the Kurmi community, one of the largest and most influential OBC groups in Bihar. Samrat completed his basic education from his village and then pursued higher education from Madurai Kamaraj University.

Political Career

Samrat Choudhary entered active politics in 1990, following the footsteps of his father, who was then a minister in the RJD government led by Lalu Prasad Yadav. He contested the 1995 assembly elections from Parbatta constituency on an RJD ticket but lost to Vidya Sagar Nishad of the Janata Dal. He got another chance in 1999, when he was appointed as the minister of agriculture in the RJD government led by Rabri Devi, Lalu’s wife. He won the 2000 assembly elections from Parbatta, defeating Vidya Sagar Nishad by a margin of over 10,000 votes.

He retained his seat in the 2005 assembly elections, but the RJD lost power to the Janata Dal (United) (JD(U))-BJP alliance led by Nitish Kumar. He became a vocal critic of Nitish Kumar’s government and accused it of neglecting the development of his constituency and the OBC communities. He also expressed his dissatisfaction with the leadership of Lalu Prasad Yadav and his son, Tejashwi Yadav, who had become the heir apparent of the RJD.

In 2014, Samrat Choudhary engineered a split in the RJD by defecting with 13 MLAs to form a separate group. He later joined the JD(U), which was then a part of the Grand Alliance with the RJD and the Congress. He was appointed as the minister of urban development and housing in the JD(U) government led by Jitan Ram Manjhi, who had replaced Nitish Kumar as the chief minister. However, he was sacked from the cabinet in 2015, after he supported Manjhi’s rebellion against Nitish Kumar, who had decided to return as the chief minister.

Choudhary then joined the BJP, which was the main opposition party in Bihar. He was nominated as a member of the Bihar Legislative Council by the governor in 2015. He became the vice president of the BJP in Bihar and the spokesperson of the party for the OBC issues. He played a key role in strengthening the BJP’s base among the OBC communities, especially the Koeris and the Kurmis, who had traditionally supported the RJD and the JD(U).
