On July 2, 2021, Gabby whose real name is Gabrielle Petito, and Brian began their four-month cross-country trip. A video named ‘VAN LIFE | Beginning Our Van Life Journey’ was also published by the couple on Gabby’s YouTube channel Nomadic Statik.
During their trip, Brian and Gabby were involved in an argument and the witness claimed of seeing Gabby hitting her boyfriend. Utah police also intervened in the situation and made Laundrie stay at a hotel for one night. Apparently, the trip was taking a lot of toll on the couple’s mental health especially Gabby’s.
She had numerous meltdowns during this time. Later, on August 24, 2021, Petito talked to her mom Nicole Schmidt. At this time, she was staying at a hotel located near Salt Lake City International Airport.
During a phone call, Gabby told her mom that she and Brian were traveling from Salt Lake City, Utah to Yellowstone National Park. Many sources claim that she was last seen at Grand Teton National Park.
In late August 2021, Nicole stopped receiving any calls or texts from her daughter’s phone. She came to know that on September 1, 2021, Brian Laundrie came back to Florida where he was staying with his parents without his fiancee.

Brian Laundrie hired a lawyer and refused to co-operate with the police in the search of Gabby Petito. It is the main reason that he became the person of interest in this case. Miranda Baker released a series of TikTok videos where she told her encounter with Brian Laundrie to whom she and her boyfriend gave a lift on August 29, 2021.
The videos soon went viral on the internet which helped in the case. The reports of Brian Laundrie’s missing suffered on the internet on September 18, 2021.
Nichole and Gabby’s other family members heard the news that the police discovered remains of humans which somewhat matched Gabby.
On September 19, 2021, the authorities released a statement where they claimed that the body was found at a national park in Wyoming, USA. Only after forensic examination, the FBI will confirm Gabby’s death. On September 21, 2021, the autopsy report confirmed that it was Gabby’s body.
