He was given the responsibility of leading the party in the 2022 assembly elections, which were due in November. He accepted the challenge and vowed to bring the Congress back to power in the state. He devised a comprehensive strategy, focusing on the following aspects:
- Unity: He ensured that there was no infighting or factionalism within the party and that all the senior leaders and workers were united and coordinated. He also reached out to the former Congress leaders and workers who had left the party or were dissatisfied and persuaded them to rejoin or support the party.
- Vision: He prepared a vision document for the party, outlining its policies, programs, and promises for the development of the state and the welfare of the people. He also consulted various experts, stakeholders, and civil society groups, and incorporated their suggestions and feedback. He also launched a slogan, “Congress ka Haath, Himachal ke Saath” (Congress’s Hand, With Himachal), to convey the party’s commitment and solidarity with the people of the state.
- Selection: He ensured that the party’s candidates for the assembly elections were selected based on merit, popularity, and winnability. He also ensured that there was adequate representation of women, youth, and marginalized sections in the party’s ticket distribution. He also roped in some prominent faces from other parties, such as former BJP minister Anil Sharma, former BSP leader Vijay Singh Mankotia, and former AAP leader Rajan Sushant, who joined the Congress before the elections.
- Campaign: He led an aggressive and effective campaign for the party, covering all the 68 assembly constituencies in the state. He addressed several rallies, roadshows, meetings, and press conferences, highlighting the achievements of the previous Congress governments, exposing the failures and misdeeds of the BJP government, and presenting the party’s vision and agenda for the future. He also invited and hosted several national leaders of the Congress, such as Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Sachin Pilot, and Navjot Singh Sidhu, who campaigned for the party in the state.
