Kamiya Jani Faces Backlash for Eating Sacred Food After Alleged Beef Consumption
A video of a popular YouTuber and travel blogger, Kamiya, eating the ‘mahaprasadam’ at the Puri Jagannath temple in Odisha, India, has sparked controversy and outrage among some Hindu groups, especially the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the ruling party at the center. The BJP has demanded the arrest of Jani and a senior official of the ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD) in the state, VK Pandian, who accompanied her to the temple, for allegedly hurting the sentiments of the devotees and violating the temple norms.
What is the controversy?
The controversy erupted after Jani posted a video on her YouTube channel on December 15, 2023, titled ‘Fun chat with Rahul Gandhi over dinner at our Bharat Jodo Yatra campsite in Rajasthan’. In the video, she can be seen having a candid conversation with the former president of the Indian National Congress (INC), the main opposition party in the country, and the leader of the Bharat Jodo Yatra, a nationwide campaign to unite the people and the opposition parties against the BJP-led government.

In the video, Jani reveals that she had visited the Puri Jagannath temple a few days ago, along with Pandian, the private secretary to the chief minister of Odisha, Naveen Patnaik, who belongs to the BJD. She says that she had the privilege of entering the sanctum sanctorum of the temple, where only a few people are allowed, and eating the ‘mahaprasadam’, the sacred food offered to the deity. She also shows a picture of herself holding a plate of the ‘mahaprasadam’, which consists of rice, dal, vegetables, and sweets.
However, some BJP leaders and supporters claimed that Jani had eaten beef in a previous video, where she had visited a restaurant in Dubai that serves exotic meats. They accused her of disrespecting the Hindu faith and the temple rules, which prohibit the entry of non-Hindus and the consumption of non-vegetarian food by the devotees. They also alleged that Pandian had misused his power and influence to facilitate Jani’s entry into the temple, and demanded his removal from the post.
