Meagan Kirby: An Equestrian and a Survivor
Meagan Kirby is the elder child and the only daughter of John Kirby and his wife Donna Kirby. She was born in 1995 and also experienced a nomadic lifestyle as a military kid. She attended several schools, including the International School of Brussels, where she graduated in 2013.
Meagan was a talented athlete and an equestrian since she was a young girl. She competed in various horse riding events and won many trophies and medals. She also loved animals and volunteered at animal shelters and rescue centers. She dreamed of becoming a veterinarian or a zoologist.
However, Meagan’s life took a dark turn when she was 15 years old. She developed anorexia nervosa, a serious eating disorder that causes a person to have an irrational fear of gaining weight and a distorted body image. She became obsessed with dieting and exercising, and lost a significant amount of weight and muscle mass. She also suffered from depression and low self-esteem. She had to stop riding horses and participating in sports because she was too weak and frail.
Meagan’s condition was so severe that she was hospitalized several times and underwent various treatments, such as therapy, medication, and nutrition counseling. She struggled with her recovery for six years, facing many relapses and setbacks. John Kirby’s daughter said in an article for CNN, “I hated myself. I hated my body. I hated food. I hated life. I wanted to die.”

John and Meagan shared their story with the public in 2018, hoping to raise awareness and break the stigma around eating disorders, especially among men and older adults. They also wanted to inspire and help others who were going through the same ordeal. They said that they were able to overcome their anorexia with the help of their family, friends, doctors, and therapists. They also credited their faith, their love for animals, and their sense of humor for their recovery.
John Kirby is not only a distinguished and respected public servant, but also a loving and supportive father. He has raised two remarkable children, Colin Kirby and Meagan Kirby, who have inherited his courage, resilience, and dedication. They have faced many challenges and overcome many obstacles, but they have never given up on their dreams and their happiness. They are an inspiration to many people and a source of pride and joy for their father.
