Controversies
Hemed Suleiman Morocco was involved in a controversy in January 2024 after he was appointed as the interim manager of the Tanzania national team following the dismissal of Adel Amrouche. Amrouche had made insulting remarks about Morocco’s influence over CAF and its match scheduling before their World Cup qualifier against Morocco on January 17, 2024. The match ended in a 3-0 victory for Morocco.
Amrouche was then suspended for eight matches by CAF and fined $10,000 for his unacceptable and inappropriate behavior. The Tanzania Football Federation (TFF) president Wallace Karia swiftly refuted Amrouche’s accusations and stated that TFF had no involvement in the decision. He also distanced the federation from Amrouche’s remarks, stating that they were his personal opinions and not representative of TFF’s stance.

However, this controversy cast a shadow over Tanzania’s World Cup aspirations, adding a layer of uncertainty to their crucial upcoming matches. It also sparked reactions from fans and media across Africa.
- Amrouche was hired by Tanzania last year to lead them in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, which were held in Ivory Coast from January 12 to February 5, 2023.
- However, he was sacked on January 19, 2024, after he was banned for eight matches and fined $10,000 by CAF’s disciplinary committee. His dismissal was confirmed by the Tanzanian Football Federation (TFF).
- The reason for his dismissal and ban was his comments about Morocco and its officials in a TV interview before the World Cup qualifier against Morocco on January 17, 2024. He said that “the Morocco federation is a proven power in the world of African football. Morocco manages African football”.
- He also alleged that Moroccan officials within CAF decide who referees matches involving the senior men’s national team, and at what time they kick off. He claimed that they wanted to play a World Cup qualifier against Tanzania last November in the afternoon, but CAF scheduled the match for the evening.
- He also suggested that an afternoon kick-off in Dar es Salaam would favor Tanzania as many Moroccan players would be coming from clubs in generally cold Europe.
- His comments were seen as disrespectful and offensive to Morocco and its people, as well as to CAF and its rules. They also sparked reactions from fans and media across Africa.
- Before being hired by Tanzania, Amrouche had coached several national teams and clubs in Africa. He had also coached Algeria’s national team from 2015 to 2016.
