For years Aakar has been working as an author and a writer. He has written books like Why I Write: Essays by Saadat Hasan Manto and has also translated a book “Why I write” (by Saadat Hasan Manto) in 2014.
He by working as an author and journalist also joined the Asian Age and remained a trainee sub-editor. Then he became the editor of Asian Age Mumbai Edition. He moved to work with Deccan Chronicle and Dorling Kindersley.

Earlier in 2016 when Amnesty International India was raided by the Central Bureau of Investigation it was sued under section 124-A. And since after Aakar has remained under the eye of the CBI.
Before April 2022 Aakar submitted a petition in order to let him travel outside of India to the US. And the court has also allowed him to travel to the US on his own passport between March 1 to May 30.
And when in April 2022 he was going to attend the conference about the Human Rights situation In India on behalf of one Invitation by a group of American Universities and Aakar Patel was stopped at the Airport.
He remained unsuccessful to board for US flight due to a pending case against Amnesty International India. The case of the Foreign Contribution Act (FCRA) is still going on Amnesty International India. Along with this, a Lookout Circular was opened against Aakar in march, 2022 against his book Price of The Modi Years.
When he was stopped by the authorities he issues a case against the CBI in Delhi court and demanded the loss of his Air ticket.
On April 7, 2022, a statement his made by the Delhi Court in favor of Aakar Patel and has ordered the CBI to withdraw LOC (Look Out Circular) against him and also asked the current CBI director to write an apology letter to Aakar Patel.
