Who Was Anojan Gnaneswaran? The Life and Death of the Engineering Student Stabbed at Strawberry Hill Station

Anojan Gnaneswaran was a 21-year-old man from Twickenham who had a bright future ahead of him. He was studying engineering at Kingston University and had a passion for music and sports. He was described by his family and friends as a kind, caring, and cheerful person who always had a smile on his face.

But his life was cut short on January 8, 2024, when he was stabbed to death at Strawberry Hill railway station, south-west London. He was attacked by a group of men just before midnight as he was waiting for a train with his girlfriend. He was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after.

What happened on that fateful night?

According to the British Transport Police, Anojan and his girlfriend were at the station platform when they were approached by a group of men who started a verbal altercation with them. The situation escalated quickly and Anojan was stabbed multiple times by one of the men. The attackers then fled the scene, leaving Anojan bleeding on the ground.

The police and paramedics arrived at the scene within minutes, but they could not save Anojan’s life. His girlfriend, who witnessed the horrific attack, was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of shock and minor injuries.

The motive for the attack is still unclear, but the police believe it was a random and unprovoked act of violence. They have launched a murder investigation and have appealed for witnesses and CCTV footage to help them identify and arrest the suspects.

Who are the suspects and what is the status of the investigation?

The police have arrested six men in connection with the investigation so far. Two 19-year-olds and an 18-year-old were arrested on January 12, 2024. Three other males aged 19, 20, and 15 were arrested on January 9, 2024. A 16-year-old boy was also arrested on January 9, 2024, but he was released on police bail1.

All the suspects are being held in custody and are being questioned by the police. The police have not released their names or any other details about them, citing the ongoing investigation.

Detective Inspector Paul Attwell, who is leading the investigation, said: “I would like to take this opportunity to thank the members of the public who have come forward with information to support this investigation. We continue to appeal for anyone that hasn’t been in touch already to reach out as soon as possible. In particular, I am urging for those who live in the vicinity of the train station.”

He also urged anyone who may have seen or heard anything suspicious on the night of the attack to contact the police or Crimestoppers anonymously.

He was a loving, loyal, and generous person who always put others before himself. He had a bright future ahead of him and he was looking forward to graduating from university and pursuing his dreams. He was taken from us in the most cruel and senseless way and we will never understand why. We ask for privacy and respect at this difficult time and we pray for justice for our son.”

His university expressed its condolences and offered support to his classmates and teachers. A spokesperson said: “We are deeply saddened by the tragic death of Anojan Gnaneswaran, a third-year engineering student at Kingston University. He was a valued member of our community and he will be greatly missed by all who knew him. We extend our heartfelt sympathies to his family and friends at this difficult time. We are providing counselling and support to his fellow students and staff who may be affected by this news.”

What can we learn from this tragedy?

Anojan’s death is a reminder of the senseless and devastating impact of knife crime in our society. It shows that anyone can be a victim of this violence, regardless of their age, background, or lifestyle. It also shows that we need to work together as a community to prevent and stop this violence from happening.

We need to educate our young people about the dangers and consequences of carrying and using knives. We need to provide them with positive and constructive alternatives to violence, such as sports, arts, and education. We need to support them with their mental health and well-being and help them cope with their emotions and challenges. We need to report any suspicious or criminal activity to the authorities and cooperate with them in their investigations. We need to stand up against violence and promote peace and harmony in our society.

We also need to remember and honour the victims of knife crime, such as Anojan, and support their families and friends who are grieving. We need to show them that we care and that we are with them in their pain and loss. We need to celebrate their lives and their achievements and keep their memories alive.

Anojan was a young man who had a lot of potential and a lot of love to give. He did not deserve to die in such a brutal and senseless way. He deserved to live and to fulfill his dreams. He deserved to be happy and to make others happy. He deserved to be remembered and to be missed.

We hope that his death will not be in vain and that his legacy will inspire us to make a positive change in our society. We hope that his death will bring justice and peace to his family and friends. We hope that his death will make us appreciate and cherish our lives and our loved ones more.

We hope that his death will make us say no to knife crime and yes to life.
