How Bryson Duong Was Rescued After His Father Brandon Duong’s Kidnapping Attempt
A father who allegedly abducted his 7-year-old son from a school in Greene County, Iowa, was arrested after a standoff with police near Remsen, Iowa, on Tuesday night. The boy, Bryson Duong, was safely recovered and reunited with his mother.
The incident triggered an Amber Alert that was issued around 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, after Brandon Duong, 34, took his son from the Greene County Elementary School at about 12:40 p.m., authorities said. A court order issued in December restricted Brandon from having custody of his son, the release said.
According to the Iowa State Patrol, Duong was driving a black Toyota Tacoma with Iowa license plate DFV202. He was spotted by a trooper near Le Mars, Iowa, around 6 p.m. and a pursuit ensued. The chase ended near Remsen, Iowa, where Brandon barricaded himself inside a building with his son.
A large law enforcement presence, including the Iowa State Patrol, Plymouth County Sheriff’s Office, Le Mars Police Department, Remsen Police Department, and Sioux City Police Department, surrounded the area and negotiated with Brandon Duong for several hours.
A peaceful resolution
The standoff finally ended around 10:30 p.m., when Brandon surrendered to the authorities and was taken into custody. His son, Bryson Duong, was found unharmed and was transported to a local hospital for evaluation. He was later reunited with his mother, who had been waiting anxiously for his safe return.
Brandon Duong was charged with kidnapping, eluding, and violating a no-contact order. He is being held at the Plymouth County Jail on a $100,000 bond. He is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday morning.
The Greene County Sheriff’s Office thanked the public for their assistance and cooperation in locating Bryson Duong and apprehending Duong. They also praised the efforts of the law enforcement agencies involved in the successful resolution of the situation.

A history of domestic abuse
Online court records show that Brandon Duong has a history of domestic abuse against Bryson Duong’s mother. He was arrested in December 2023 for assaulting her and threatening to kill her and their son. He also violated a no-contact order several times by contacting her through phone calls, text messages, and social media.
Bryson’s mom filed for a protective order against Brandon, stating that he was mentally unstable, suicidal, and had access to firearms. She also expressed fear for her son’s safety and requested full custody of him. The court granted her request and ordered Duong to stay away from them.
However, Brandon Duong apparently ignored the court order and took his son from the school on Tuesday, sparking the Amber Alert and the standoff. His motive for doing so remains unclear, but authorities said they are investigating the case and may file additional charges against him.

A happy ending
