Priya Darshini who is an Indian Singer nominated for Grammy Awards 2021

Grammy nomination is a huge deal and Indian singer Priya Darshini got nominated for her album Periphery in the category “Best New Age Album”. During an interview, she shared her experience that everything happened virtually. So she was in her apartment, going online going live on the Grammys website.
She also said that it was all very elaborate, but all online. Priya Darshini was based out of Mumbai, and this is where a lot of music training also happened. She moved to New York because of music in 2013. For music, she has always wanted to explore different styles of music and immerse herself in other styles of music study, and learn more.
Talking about Periphery, she recorded this in a church in Brooklyn, and also this was recorded live with it. She said in the interview It was an incredibly challenging and brilliant innovation. And if you hear the record, you’ll hear it on headphones, especially you hear the whole space.
The whole idea is to have a collaboration with the architecture of the space, the music, and the recording technology as per Priya Darshini. According to her, it is so timeless because of the style of recording. Her team recorded this whole album on one microphone, live, and just did it in two or three takes top to bottom, and then picking a take that they liked best.
Priya finds it beautiful about keeping human errors. When she first heard it, she was like that is off. But then slowly, she started to understand the beauty of it. When we go into a studio, you have the ability to do many takes and you have the ability to edit.
In this scenario you have what you do at that moment is what it is. Priya Darshini found the whole process was daunting, but it also allowed her to drop on her walls, drop her egos, and function from that place of full honesty and authenticity.
Priya and her family also run an NGO here in Mumbai. Their nonprofit is called Jana Rakshita. And they work in pediatric cancer. They also work with building infrastructure and educational facilities for our diverse communities in Maharashtra.
Jana Rakshita’s focus is actually on education for girls. Their last project was building toilets for a couple of schools because a lot of girls were dropping out of school around the age of 12 and 13 because of hygiene issues. She also said that she really wanted her dear friend “Anoushka Shankar” to win this time. She has been nominated seven times but never won.
