The ninth episode of For All Mankind season 3 will pick up from where the eighth episode left off, with the nine surviving astronauts on Mars trying to dig out their MSAM (Mars Surface Access Module) from the rubble of the landslide that killed Alexei Poletov. The MSAM is their only hope of reconnecting with Phoenix, the orbiting spacecraft that can take them back to Earth. However, the MSAM is damaged and too small for all of them, so they have to figure out a way to fix it and decide who gets to go first.
Meanwhile, Kelly’s pregnancy becomes a major issue, as she can no longer fit into her NASA spacesuit and has to use a Soviet one instead. The news of her pregnancy also reaches Earth, where it causes a media frenzy and a public debate. Some people see it as a historic and miraculous event, while others view it as a scandal and a distraction. NASA also receives a lot of gifts and messages for the unborn child, who will technically be a Martian if born on the red planet.
On Earth, Ellen faces a political crisis, as her presidency is threatened by the failure of the Mars mission, the revelation of Larry’s affair, and the pressure from the government to sign a bill that would give them full control of NASA. Elsewhere, Dev Ayesa continues his dream of building a colony on Mars, but he faces opposition from the board of Helios, who are unhappy with his leadership and his new spacecraft design, Calypso. The board tries to oust Dev and replace him with Karen Baldwin, who impresses them with her proposal to sell Phoenix to NASA. Aleida also pursues her investigation into Margo’s involvement in the sabotage of the Soviet engine, but she is betrayed by Bill, who brings in the FBI to handle the case.
